Caswell - Music Video
Caswell came at me with two ideas, one much harder to do than the other, but it sounded better and allowed me to be more creative so I said yes to the harder one. After finding the perfect location [a cool bar in Ipswich, Suffolk] and a date locked in, shoot day had come around quickly.
I knew I wanted to get full creative here especially with lighting, I was using a Godox ML60Bi with a soft box and boom arm as my main light source, to light up the band, drums and main scenes. I was then using the Neewer LED RGB Panels for some colours to the scenes and to create moody atmosphere.
Shooting with the Sony A7Siii and a combination of lenses including the Tamron 17-28mm 2.8 and Sony 35mm 1.8. Having it rigged up in a handheld setup I knew I wanted to create a more free hand and shakey look to the video. Handheld alone is good for bands and live music as it allows you to bounce with the artist/band ensuring the shots look more natural and less robotic is it was on a gimbal. There weren't any walk-through or tracking shots needed so a gimbal wasn't required.
The A7Siii is great in low light allowing me to shoot 12,800 ISO in S-log3. We shot all the solo parts in the morning before lunch and then in the afternoon we did the full band bits just before the final shots with a full crowd.
The venue was rather small, but this wasn't a problem, sometimes it can be hard to get people to attend music videos so having a not so large space made it easier and made it look busier than what it was.
Editing this video was a lot of fun! Using a M1 Max MacBook Pro and editing in Final Cut Pro made it super easy for me to add all the RAW footage [without proxies] to my timeline and sort through / cull each part to my liking.
I sent Caswell a couple of rough cut videos to ensure she was happy with the video so far before continuing with adding effects and colour grading it.
